Contra and Community: Building Community Through Contra

What is Contra Dance?
Contra Dance can be described as Collective, Coordinated Movement. A caller instructs participants in movements as a dance progresses, and dances are designed to rotate partners and neighbors so that each participant has the opportunity to dance with many others within one dance. It’s energetic, inclusive, and designed to bring people together through movement, rhythm, and shared experience.

Class Descriptions:

Junior Class: 8th - 9th grade
Students will focus on building community through equal parts of contra dance, instruction (on decorum, boundaries, and personal development), and same-gender small group discussion. Class is intended for students interested in connecting with new peers and open to guidance in how to do so in healthy and respectful ways.

Classes A and B: 10th - 12th grade
Students will focus on building community through contra dance, instruction (on decorum, boundaries, and personal development), and small group discussion.

**The difference between Class A and Class B is duration: Class A is shorter since it is squeezed between two other Inspire One classes. For this reason, priority registration for Class A goes to students enrolled in a class directly before or after (Bells/Ensemble). Due to its shorter length, its enrollment cap is smaller, but the content of the class will be the same as Class B.

Class Offerings:

Junior Class -  $100
8th - 9th grade (ages 13-14)
Tuesdays - 9:15 to 10:15
