Contra and Community: Building Community Through Contra

What is Contra Dance?
Contra Dance can be described as Collective, Coordinated Movement. A caller instructs participants in movements as a dance progresses, and dances are designed to rotate partners and neighbors so that each participant has the opportunity to dance with many others within one dance. It’s energetic, inclusive, and designed to bring people together through movement, rhythm, and shared experience.

Class Descriptions:

Junior Class: 8th - 9th grade (ages 13.5 - 15.5)
Contra dance offers a structured artistic environment where students develop genuine social awareness through music, movement, and partnership, Learning to respond to partners with courtesy, timing, and clarity becomes a gentle training ground for relational maturity that feels natural, creative, and confidence-building. Students will build community through a combination of dance and class discussion.

Senior Class: 10th - 12th grade (ages 15.5 - 18.5)
Contra dance is rooted in a tradition of decorum that highlights and honors the distinct contributions and complementarity of the genders. The class cultivates a safe environment for developing stronger expressions of masculinity and femininity. Building on the community trust and mutual respect developed in the fall term, spring semester invites students to take greater responsibility for the atmosphere they help create by exercising the strengths natural to their gender.

This class is designed for students who are serious about personal growth, willing to regulate their presence, and ready to engage thoughtfully in reflection and discussion. There will be weekly assignments that require presence and reflection.

New students interested in joining will need to complete a brief interview to ensure the class is a good fit.
